Designing for the Big Ships at Schottel-Werft
ICEM DDN has played a pivotal role in the design of large and complex shipcomponents."A functional CAD system alone is not sufficient to meet our requirements" is aprinciple statement at Schottel-Werft shipyard in Spay on the Rhine. The companyspecializes in developing and designing ship drives and, of course, their installation innew and existing hulls. With eight years of experience using CAD systems from ICEMTechnologies, Jurgen Theiss of Shottel-Werft raises three distinct advantages:
First, innovations have been accelerated substantially, newdevelopments are released on the market earlier, and customer requests are fulfilledfaster.
Second, critical components can be optimized with regard to strengthand fluid mechanics directly on the computer using ICEM software—before incurring anyproduction costs.
Third, the superior and dedicated support provided by ICEMTechnologies' support staff was critical to installation, maintenance and enhancement ofthe CAD system.

Approximately 25 employees work with CAD at Schottel-Werft—primarily in productdevelopment and design. ICEM DDN's powerful surfacing capabilities are in particulardemand whenever complex molded parts such as propellers and pump jets.

To manage a large number of designs efficiently and reliably, Schottel-Werft hasestablished an effective file administration system for the design drawings with ICEM DDNORGA-Archive. Existing components and assemblies can be searched according to variouscriteria via the technical features toolbar and can then be connected to the currentdesign. ICEM DDN has the advantage that the user need not interrupt their design but cansearch directly in the design archives while working on a drawing. Recently,Schottel-Werft began a joint venture in China, where ICEM Software is also beingintroduced. |
